By Lookout Staff July 29, 2011 – As always, it's going to be a busy weekend in Santa Monica – whether you're into health, fitness, the ocean enviroment or, even, the Navy, you'll have plenty to keep you happy. The American Red Cross of Santa Monica is hosting its thirteenth annual free Citizen CPR Saturday, offering a mix of text, lecture and hands-on learning throughout the day. Residents can pick up the basics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and, perhaps most importantly, how to act with decisiveness and confidence in an emergency. “Red Cross CPR classes for certification are given throughout the year, but this is one of the few opportunities for the public to learn various life-saving techniques for free,” said Red Cross spokesman Bill Bauer. The event is part of KABC Channel 7's “ABCs of a Safe Summer” campaign, and is being held in conjunction with the City of Santa Monica. Three one-hour classes will be held at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 a.m. at the Ken Edwards Center, 1527 Fourth Street. Pre-registration is advised. Register by calling (310) 394-3773 Friday during business hours, or (800) 627-7000. Up the street, the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce is hosting it's annual Health and Fitness Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Third Street Promenade Saturday. The festival is free, and draws thousands to downtown Santa Monica, where this year, they'll be able to take advantage of health screening, Zumba lessons, try out kick-boxing, learn pet and human CPR and cap the whole experience with a “Dance Off.” Santa Monica Volunteer of the Year Adam Holt and special guest Tony Horton from the P90X Fitness Phenomenon will be on hand to help Santa Monicans celebrate the healthy lifestyle this city is famous for. Down by the beach, the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium is hosting a family-friendly Ocean Appreciation Celebration Saturday and Sunday. Saturday, photographer Alexander Jaffe will share his diving adventures with a display of underwater photography featuring up-close views of Santa Monica Bay ocean wildlife. And on Sunday, Aquarium Director Douglas Rowell gives the young and the young-at-heart a treat with his animated music video based on Joel Harper's children's book “All the Way to the Ocean.” Hands-on features include field work at the Wildlife Observation Station at the end of the pier, a “Meet the Locals” activity that brings visitors into close contact with local marine life, and a special shark feeding on Sunday. For details and times, check out the Aquarium's website. Sunday is Navy day, the brainchild of Santa Monica City Councilmember Robert Holbrook, who told the council that he remembered the days when Navy ships dropped anchor near the Pier. Inspired by the dedication of our service men and women at sea, he proposed inviting the crew of a ship to enjoy a little R-and-R in Santa Monica. So expect to see a lot of smartly turned out sailors enjoying all the fun our city has to offer. Several hundred crewmembers of the USS Abraham Lincoln – a nuclear aircraft carrier that recently finished a six-month deployment in the Persian Gulf – will tie up in port in Long Beach and come to Santa Monica to enjoy the final day of Navy Week. Word is, they'll bring their own band, The Destroyers, to the pier to amp up the action, and there might be a little paratrooper action thrown in, so it looks like the pier is the place to be this Sunday. |
