Cinema Under the Stars in Downtown Santa Monica |

By Ann K. Williams July 13, 2011 – Everything in Santa Monica is better outdoors during the summer, and that includes movies. This month, Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. (DTSM) and local merchants are presenting “Cinema on the Street,” a series of family-friendly shows at the Third Street Promenade timed to begin with the setting sun. “We've been focused on community-minded events,” Debbie Lee, director of marketing for DTSM told The Lookout Tuesday. So when CommCinema – the company behind outdoor movies at Santa Monica Place, the Pier and the beach – approached DTSM, “it just worked,” said Lee. “For us, it's a matter of an engaging family-friendly experience that everyone can enjoy,” she said. “We want people to think of the Third Street Promenade as their living room.” The series kicked off last week with “The Princess Bride.” More than 100 people showed up, some in family groups, some on dates, and some who just showed up on their own, Lee said. DTSM sponsored the movie and handed out free tumblers embossed with the new DTSM logo. “We hope that all four of the movies will be just as well received,” said Lee. Tonight's feature is “The Goonies,” a tale of adventure featuring a group of intrepid kids trying to save their neighborhood from the depredations of evil developers. The kids' quest is spurred on by the discovery of a pirate treasure map that leads them to a cavern under the home of a family of thieves. The premise promises entertainment and fun for all ages. Santa Monica Place, Dragon Herb and Stefano's Pizza are the sponsors of tonight's show, and goji berries, tea and Beachy Cream ice cream will be among the free handouts. Next Wednesday, July 20, “Step Into Liquid,” a lyrical surf movie that takes viewers to secret beach idylls around the world, will be on the bill. O'Neill – a surf retailer that opened its new location at 2nd Street and Broadway last week – will sponsor Step Into Liquid. And Friday, July 29, the silent movie “The General” will finish the series. Laughs abound as Buster Keaton tries to prove to his true love Annabelle that he's not a coward when his train – The General – is captured by the Union army. As a special treat, world-renowned pianist Rick Friend will provide the soundtrack. The outdoor movie screen will be set up on the Promenade between Wilshire Boulevard and Arizona Avenue, just outside Chipotle Mexican Grill. Attendance is free – all viewers need to bring will be a blanket or beach chairs. The movies begin as soon after 7:30 p.m. as it gets dark enough to see them on the screen. Parking is available in city Parking Structures 1-9 throughout Downtown Santa Monica. Vehicles entering after 6 p.m. pay a $5 flat rate. |
