|Shakespeare and More This Sunday in Santa Monica|
By Lookout Staff
August 12, 2011 – Shakespeare anyone? The Bard of Avon gets top billing this weekend– would he ever get any less? – with two performances back-to-back this Sunday in Santa Monica.
The final performance of The Tempest will begin at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, August 14, at the Annenberg Beach House at 451 Pacific Coast Highway.
Giant puppets (made with help from local residents) and original songs pep up the Santa Monica Rep's imaginative tale of a banished wizard and his daughter trapped on an enchanted isle.
The performance is free, but reservations are required. For more information, call (310) 458-4904 or go to the Beach House website.
After that play you just might have time to hop up to the Miles Playhouse where you can catch Much Ado About Nothing staged by the Not Man Apart – Physical Theatre Ensemble. The tale of two romantically bedeviled couples – are they in love or aren't they? – starts at 8 p.m. this Sunday, August 14, and will be repeated next Thursday, August 18 at 8 p.m. and next Sunday, August 21 at 8 p.m.
The Miles Playhouse is located in Reed Park on the corner of 7th Street and Wilshire Boulevard. Admission is $20, or pay what you can, free for children under 12. For more information, call (310) 270-3454 or click on the Shakespeare Santa Monica's website.
If the idea of all that witty repartee is just too much for your work-weary brain, you can always hang out on the lawn in front of City Hall and enjoy the jazz of the Tony Guerrero Quintet.
Featuring the worksFrank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Louis Prima and Tony Bennett, this combo's guaranteed to take you back to the 1950's and 60's.
Local dancer and choreographers Christine Suarez will be on hand to help you find your groove in an open-community dance jam.
The show starts at 5 p.m. on the lawn at 1685 Main Street. Bike valet parking will be provided and Lake Street Creamery will be on hand with frozen treats.
