Samohi Football Player Seriously Injured

By Lookout Staff

September 16, 2009 -- A popular Samohi student and a member of the school's varsity football team remains hospitalized after sustaining a serious injury during a game Saturday.

Cody Williams, an H House Junior, suffered trauma to the cervical spine during the last quarter of a game against Luzinger High School, according to school officials.

Williams was transported by ambulance to UCLA's Reagan Medical Center where he underwent surgery under the care of a highly regarded medical team.

"Doctors have shared with Cody's family that a full prognosis of his injury will take 6-12 months to determine and will remain there for at least two weeks," Dr. Hugo A. Pedroza, the school's principal, wrote in an email to the Samohi community.

"Mrs. Williams has requested that only immediate family come to visit Cody because she wants him to rest in the quietest of environments. She will share information about his
condition as it becomes available but for now she asks that you keep positive thoughts of support for Cody's speedy recovery."

The school began providing counseling support to students and adults on Monday morning, officials said.

"Obviously, this is a difficult time for all of us and it is possible that students and adults may need support to deal with this situation," Dr. Pedroza wrote.

Those who need access to these services should contact their House office so that proper, immediate arrangements can be made.
