October 28, 2009 -- When Santa Monica Place reopens next August after an extensive remodel, it will boast nine fast-casual restaurants on its signature rooftop dining deck, Macerich officials announced Tuesday.
A 17,000-square-foot space dominated by extensive glass and open views will feature a smorgasbord of choices -- from an assortment of Asian dishes, to a hybrid of Persian and California cuisine, to tacos and all American burgers and milkshakes.

"There is nothing like this in Santa Monica now," said Michael Guerin, assistant vice president of leasing, for Macerich. "This well-chosen set of quick concepts complements our collection of chef-driven restaurants on our Dining Deck to offer something for every appetite.
"The entire third level of the property is dedicated to exciting food experiences of all kinds and this plus the great views make Santa Monica Place thoroughly unique in the market,” Guerin said.
The tenants are Southern California's Charlie Kabob, which features a popular blend of Persian and California cuisines; Chick n' Ribs, which offers home-style barbecue favorites; Santa Monica-based Fatburger, which will bring its renowned burgers, homemade onion rings and milkshakes, and Manchu Wok, which specializes in authentic Chinese dishes.
Other tenants are Pinches Tacos; Sarku Japan, which features made-to-order teriyaki and sushi; Stefano's Pizza, which offers East Coast pizza by the slice; the locally-owned Sushi Itto, which creates fresh sushi, sashimi and other Japanese favorites, and Wetzel's Pretzels.
“It's fresh tacos with a view," Guerin said. "It's a great new setting for an L.A. legend, Fatburger, now with an ocean breeze, and it will be home to seven additional concepts that will help make the dining deck a real destination for easy and wonderful food."
Tuesday's announcement constitutes the fourth wave of leases for the 30 year-old mall. In August, Macerich added five new retailers and restaurants to the mix of upscale offerings at the new, three-level, open-air shopping and dining destination taking shape Downtown. In February, Macerich announced it was adding eleven new establishments -- including restaurants that feature Latin American cuisine, Mexican fare and handmade pizza -- to the eclectic menu of offerings. ("Mall Gets Second Wave of Tenants," February 13, 2009)
Slated to reopen on August 6, 2010, the indoor mall will have been literally turned inside out, making it an upscale outdoor extension of the wildly popular Third Street Promenade. Shoppers will be invited to enjoy an open sky and diners to take in a sweeping view of the Pacific. ("Santa Monica Place to Open in August 2010," May 7, 2009)
Three weeks after the opening, Nordstrom will
hold a grand opening of its own, joining Bloomingdale's
as the mall's other anchor store.
