Santa Monica Convention & Visitors Bureau Goes Green

By Lookout Staff

March 12 -- The Convention & Visitors Bureau this month became Santa Monica’s first charter business recognized by the City’s Green Business Certification Program.

Launched in October, the program certifies and recognizes local businesses that have taken steps to incorporate sustainable practices that reduce waste and conserve natural resources. It also provides educational assistance to encourage businesses to implement cost-saving “green” practices.

“We’re extremely proud to receive the Green Certification,” said Misti Kerns, the bureau’s CEO. “It’s a significant honor and a validation of our efforts to create a healthier workplace for our employees, preserve resources, and reduce energy costs, as well as promoting ‘green’ alternatives to the visitors of Santa Monica.”

The CVB -- which worked with the City, the Chamber of Commerce and Sustainable Works -- was recognized for promoting Santa Monica’s sustainable lifestyle, both in its marketing and services to tourists, residents, and local businesses.

The bureau prints its letterhead and business cards on recycled paper, performs local errands on bike or foot and uses reusable kitchenware, office supplies and packaging, Kerns said.

“We found that we were already doing many of the right things that protect the environment and conserve our resources,” she said. “So it was natural for us to be a leader and a good example of what can be done within the community.”

To be awarded a certificate applicants must read through a list and check off measures that apply to their business practices that preserve energy and water, reduce waste and prevent pollution. Minimum standards must be met in each area.

A Green Business Certification decal lets consumers and visitors know which companies are going “green,” City officials said.
