July 8 -- A 21-year-old Latino was shot and killed
in Ocean Park early Saturday morning in what police believe
was a gang-related shooting.
David Silva, a resident of Culver City, was shot in the torso
with a small caliber handgun, as he walked with friends on
Neilson Way at around 1:40 a.m., police said
The victim was driven to UCLA Medical Center by his friends,
where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, said Lt. Alex Padilla,
the Police Department spokesman.
Several shots were fired from what witnesses described as
a silver or blue-four door vehicle headed northbound on Nielson
Way, police said.
The suspects had been involved in an argument with the victim
and his friends in a beach parking lot on the 2800 block of
Nielson way, Padilla said.
The two groups of three or four male Hispanics had exchanged
gang signs, he said.
Detectives are still trying to identify the involved gangs
and the motive, Padilla said.
