April 19 -- An 80-year-old man was found floating
dead off the west end of the Santa Monica Pier Tuesday night,
according to Santa Monica Police.
At approximately 9:40 p.m., Santa Monica police officers responded
to the call to help Harbor Guards recover the body of a white
male seen floating face down.
They attempted to revive him, but he was declared dead at
the scene.
The body was turned over to Los Angeles County Coroners officials;
police believe the cause of death was an apparent drowning.
"Attempts to resuscitate the subject were unsuccessful
and he was pronounced dead," said Lt. Alex Padilla, the
Police Department spokesperson.
Police officials did not comment on whether they have ruled
out suicide, however, there is no indication of murder.
"There does not appear to be any signs of foul play,"
Padilla said. “Until we hear from the Coroners Office,
we will not know the cause of death.”
His identity is being withheld pending notification of the
family, said Padilla
Police stressed that its is not the body of a man missing
from the South Bay area.
"The deceased is not the same person that disappeared
while fishing in San Pedro in March of this year," said
Padilla.
