Man Wounded in Pico Neighborhood Shooting

By Lookout Staff

May 4 – A man was wounded by gunfire in a crime-riddled pocket of the Pico Neighborhood Monday night, police said.

Officers responding to a radio call of shots fired on the 1800 block of 17th Street at around 9:20 p.m. found the victim with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the right leg, police said.

The victim was uncooperative and refused to provide pertinent information regarding potential suspects or the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident, said Lt. P.J. Guido, a police department spokesman.

The victim was treated at the scene by Santa Monica Fire Department Paramedics and later transported to a local hospital.

Witnesses described a white vehicle, possibly a Nissan or Toyota, leaving the area shortly after the shooting. No other description of the vehicle is available. The investigation is on-going.

The shooting took place in an area of the Pico Neighborhood where 19-year-old Jalonnie D. Carter was fatally shot last September. It was also the scene of a string of shootings last summer that did not result in injuries.

Last month, residents reported shots fired in the area.

Anyone having any information regarding this incident should call the Robbery/Homicide Unit of the Santa Monica Police Department at 310.458.8451.

Callers who wish to remain anonymous may also call the We-Tip national hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME (27463).
