Shots Fired in Pico Neighborhood By Lookout Staff June 18 – Two shots were reportedly fired this week in a troubled pocket of the Pico Neighborhood that was the scene of a shooting spree one year ago, police said. The sound of shots fired was reported Monday at 5:43 p.m. on the 1800 block of 17th Street, police said. No one was hit. “Officers talked to witnesses, who were uncooperative,” said Lt. Frank Fabrega, the police department spokesman. Last year, the violence riddled block was the scene of several shots fired between May 9 and June 5. No one was injured. In one of the incidents a bullet pierced the window of a bedroom of an affordable housing project where children were asleep. Police blamed the string of shootings on gangs and officers in riot gear -- including helmets, shields, high-powered guns and gas masks -- raided three homes, netting three arrests. A total of seven suspects were arrested in connection with the shootings, but none faced prosecution. |
