Man Shot in Pico Neighborhood

By Lookout Staff

Jan. 16 – A man was wounded in a gang-related drive-by shooting as he sat inside his vehicle in the Pico Neighborhood Thursday morning, police said.

The incident took place at 8:07 a.m. near the 1900 block of Euclid Street, blocks from a crime-prone pocket of the neighborhood.

The victim, who drove himself to a local hospital, told police that two or three male Hispanics drove up alongside his vehicle and opened fire, said Lt. Frank Fabrega, the Police Department spokesman.

“The victim provided officers with limited information and was less than cooperative,” Fabrega said.

The suspects were driving what is described as an older-model, blue compact vehicle, police said.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the incident is gang-related, Fabrega said.

Tuesday's incident was the fourth report of shots fired in the Pico Neighborhood in the last two months.

The neighborhood, which is the city’s poorest, was the site of last year's only homicide when Jalonnie D. Carter, a young black man, was fatally shot in an alley on September 2.

Five shootings also took place in the Pico neighborhood between May 9 and June 5. No one was injured in the shootings.

Anyone with any information regarding Thursday’s incident is encouraged to call the Santa Monica Police Department at 310.458.8491.
