Santa Monica Coalition for a Livable City is Not Against Growth
January 15, 2014
To the Editor,
Your referring to Santa Monica Coalition for a Livable City (SMCLC) as a "no-growth" group is incorrect. ("Santa Monica No-Growth Group Rallies Against 'Largest Development in 25 Years,'" January 14)
At no time in our eight year history have we ever said, or even implied, that we're against all growth in our city. Indeed, we sponsored an initiative (Prop T) which would have capped yearly commercial growth not stopped it.
We, along with many Santa Monicans, are for reasonable growth. Placing one of the largest developments in Santa Monica history in an already congested area of our city; wanting to put 20-story buildings downtown; pushing for greater heights and densities along our major thoroughfares, is hyper-growth and poor planning.
SMCLC is against this type of runaway development which decreases our quality of our life and is unsustainable.
"No-growth" is a term developers use to make residents opposing them seem unreasonable. Your labeling us with that term does a disservice to your readers.
