A Special Thanks to the Santa Monica City Council
Dear Mayor and City Council:
I wanted to take a moment to let Council members know how proud they should be of the many organizations and individuals who worked together on the Pier promotional event for the SYTA (Student & Youth Travel Association) conference on August 25th.
Prior to coming to our event the SYTA delegates were treated to the best LA had to offer, with events at such places as Universal, The Science Center (home to the Endeavor) and more. From what visiting delegates told us our Pier event, without a doubt, was the highlight of the 2013 conference. In fact, more than a few told me their Pier visit was one of the best events they have ever been treated to at conferences around the country.
I wanted to recognize and thank some of those who helped to make our event such a huge success:
Mayor Pam O’Connor. Thank you for making the effort to attend, welcoming SYTA delegates to our city. The delegates were blown away by the fact that the mayor took the time to be there.
The Santa Monica CVB. They may be a small group, but they are mighty. The volunteer star of the night had to be Benjamin Steers who went above and beyond when he crawled under the Pier and retrieved a delegate’s cellphone (which had fallen through the deck cracks).
The next day the relieved guest and her associates were still raving about his willingness to go below the pier to assist a visitor and the fact that he actually found it!
A big thank you to Misti Kerns for her on-stage host duties and to Travis Pham for his efforts. An extra thank you to the CVB for covering the city parking fees for the use of the Pier Deck. Without that assistance this event would not have been possible.
The Pier Corp. The staff helped with art, organization and donation, and a very special thank you to Jim Harris, who spent countless hours helping us to make the event a success. Jim was always there for us, even for a 7 am delivery after a late Pier Concert night.
Carey Upton and Bill Wishart with SAMOHI, Carey who helped our committee see student travel from a fresh perspective and for the fabulous performance of the SAMOHI Jazz Sextet and Bill for working with students on a video showcasing the Pier. Check out the fun video they put together for the delegates’ bus ride into Santa Monica.
Downtown Santa Monica. Thank you for being one of our sponsors and to Cheryl Bagby for taking on the responsibility for the bus traffic plan.
Sarah McCann (Pacific Park) and Erin Deviny (Bubba Gump). I can’t think of anyone I would rather spend 2 years on a project with.
And finally, a loud Thank You to all those out and about at the Pier that night who, with their smiles and good nature, demonstrated clearly the positive energy of this little town by the sea.
This event was hosted and paid for by members of the Partner Committee and Sponsors, including:
Rusty’s Surf Ranch - SYTA member (Cindy Pfeifer); Pacific Park - SYTA member (Sarah McCann); Bubba Gump’s - SYTA member (Erin Deviny)
Perry’s - SYTA member (Richard Chacker, Betsy Saraceno); Santa Monica CVB - (Travis Pham); Pier Corporation - (Jay Farrand, Jim Harris, Craig Hoffman); Pier Lessees Association - (Chris Volaski); Santa Monica / Malibu Unified School District - (Carey Upton)
Downtown Santa Monica; Pier Bait & Tackle; Oatman Rock Shop; Cirque du Soleil; Catalina Channel Express; Hornblower Cruises; Sony Pictures; Red & White Fleet; Malibu Discovery Wine; Seasons 52; Luxe Bus; Transportation Charter Services; Homestyle Buffet; Golden Coral Buffet; Piscoe Porton.
We should all be very proud of the work this group did on the behalf of our city.
