"A Smart Common-sense Answer" February 1, 2007 Dear Editor, In response to the article about crosswalks at Pico and 16th, why not install a stop light instead? It's a smart common sense answer. That corner is adjacent to a school, and close to many other schools, so there are a lot of students, young and old, crossing at that corner. 16th is at the top of a hill, and cars are usually traveling faster than normal when they crest the hill. If the assumption is that people will walk to 17th to cross safely, then that assumption is wrong. How about requiring a stop sign or signal at every corner of every school,
from preschools to college. Too bad if it slows traffic, we're talking
about making it safe for pedestrians and slowing down traffic. We really
don't need a "study" to figure it out. |
