Trusted Source, Taking Responsibility
and Outstanding News
March 19, 2004
Dear Editor,
Anniversary congratulations to The Lookout staff!!! A well-informed
public is essential to a successful democracy. (“Surfsantamonica.com
Turns 5,” March 12, 2004)
In five short years, "surfsantamonica" has become one
of Santa Monica's most trusted sources of information. May your
consistently high journalistic standards continue to serve our community
for many more.
Richard Bloom
Mayor of Santa Monica

Dear Editor,
School funding is a long-standing problem that will be solved when
citizens of California take responsibility for the future of our
children and demand that excellent public education be the cornerstone
of that future. (“OPINION:
City's ‘Historic Blueprint’ to Fund Schools Guarantees Accountability,”
March 23, 2004)
Meanwhile, it will be efforts like those of Mayor Bloom, the City
Council and concerned citizens to enhance the City's support to
our local schools that will continue to make Santa Monica's schools
among the best in a state that consistently underfunds education.
One of Santa Monica's many strengths is the willingness of officials
and citizens to work together to solve problems and create a better
life and future for our citizens.

Dear Editor,
Outstanding news! AVID is probably a great program. (“University
Doors Opening for District Students,” March 16, 2004)
The AVID program at John Adams Middle School has a good reputation.
Would you please tell us how many years the district has offered
AVID? How many of our students are enrolled in AVID? What is the
percentage of student population enrolled in the program by school?
Please follow up this article with more information -- when AVID
students arrive at university, how many of these students require
math or English remediation, how many graduate in four years, how
many graduate at all and with what majors and what job prospects?
Sincerely,
Tina Grossman
