Planning Reduces Need for Transit
July 28, 2004
Dear Editor:
In his July 26 response
to Frank Gruber’s column, Mayor Bloom gets it half-right. (“WHAT
I SAY: Feeding the Stereotype,” July 26, 2004 and "LETTERS:
Prius Envy," July 27, 2004) Clearly we need to encourage public
transportation, and the Expo Light Rail, as a way to reduce traffic
and pollution in Santa Monica. But relying solely on transit is
not enough. Frank Gruber is right to point out the environmental
value of living close to work.
In fact, SCAG’s [Southern
California Association of Governments] recently completed “Compass”
plan for growth in Southern California highlights the need for transit-oriented
development and encouraging people to simply live close to where
they work.
If we truly wish to reach
the goals of a sustainable city and provide affordable housing,
goals that both Bloom and Gruber no doubt share, we must not forget
the critical importance of linking land use policy and transportation.

More Praise for
Prius
July 28, 2004
Dear Editor:
Here is my 2 cents on
the Prius situation. Prius drivers should get every bonus they can.
Having lived ALL my life
in Santa Monica (68 years), I have recently moved to Palm Springs
– work related. I had to buy a new car and decided that since I
have to come to town at least once a month, a gas guzzler was not
in order. I LOVE my car.
I have not found it expensive
considering I haven’t filled the tank for almost two months.
