Put Differences Aside

June 2, 2002

Dear Editor.

On June 3, voters have the chance to help stave off a crisis in our local schools. Faced with an unprecedented state budget deficit, Santa Monica’s schools are looking at harsh cuts in excess of $13 million.

We cannot stand by and let our children -- our future -- suffer. That is why I, as a member of our business community and a resident for over 50 years, am asking you to join with me, other community leaders, school officials, teachers and students, and local neighborhood groups to ensure the success of Measure S.

A similar measure last fall was defeated because only 62 percent of the voters supported it. We simply must get the required two-thirds majority next month or our schools will experience damage that will take us years to repair.

Those of us who operate businesses understand how important good local schools are to the community in which our clients, customers and employees live and work. An educated work force in a stable community is essential to our success.

There have been times when some members of our community have pushed for things that are at odds with the interests of business people. Yet can we not set aside our differences for something that should be a common goal: giving of our children the opportunity for a stronger future?

As a group, the business community has pledged to raise funds for a campaign to get voters to the polls on June 3 and vote “yes” on Measure S. We intend to do more. We have worked hard to ensure that this limited six-year parcel tax is fair. We have asked our employees who live in the community to volunteer with us in supporting the efforts of teachers and students, who are the future employees and employers of our community.

This is a dynamic and stimulating community where different groups often disagree on what is best for our community. But I believe that there are basic issues upon which we can and should cooperate to the ultimate benefit of all.

Passing Measure S -- keeping the doors of opportunity open to our children -- and thereby contributing to a better future for all of our families, friends, employees and fellow business people – is most certainly one of them.

Sincerely,

Bob Gabriel
