A Sandwich in the Pants, a Flying Watermelon and a Battle with Broomsticks Compiled by Teresa Rochester A Santa Monica man was held on $5,000 bail after he allegedly drank a soft drink and stole a sandwich from Bay Cities Deli by sticking it down his pants on Thursday, Sept. 13, police said. A security person said he saw Francisco Anthony Rangel take a bottle of Gatorade out of the store's refrigerated drink section at the deli at 1517 Lincoln Blvd., drink it and put the empty bottle back into the case, SMPD spokesman Lt. P.J. Guido said. Rangel then allegedly ordered a sandwich, put it into his pants and tried to walk out of the store at around 1:13 p.m. The loss was $9.82. The security guard told police that he recognized Rangel from an earlier alleged petty theft that store personnel did not report to authorities. Rangel was charged with petty theft and held on felony probation violation. A Los Angeles man was robbed of $45 as he walked down 7th Street outside of the Ocean Park Community Center at 1616 7th St. on Wednesday, Sept. 12, police said. The victim told police that the suspect walked toward him and asked him for some change. Two other men were allegedly with the suspect, but they did not say or do anything, Guido said. The suspect then asked the man for all of his money. Fearing that he would be hurt, the victim gave the man all the money he had, which totaled $45. The suspect fled the scene. The suspect is described a 30-year-old male Hispanic, 5 feet 7 inches, 140 pounds with a shaved head. At the time of the incident he was wearing a white T-shirt and pants of an unknown color. A man who was trying to prevent a fight from breaking out in front of the Circle Bar at 2926 Main St. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, was struck in the back of the head by an unknown assailant, police said. The 33-year-old Ventura man was standing outside of the trendy bar at around 11 p.m. chatting with several bar employees when he saw a group of eight or 10 people in the middle of the street yelling at the bar's security guard, Guido said. The man then saw a man running with four to five broomsticks, which he placed in front of the angry crowd, "like giving them weapons," the victim told police. The Ventura man went to pick up the broomsticks because he feared a fight would start, but he was hit in the back of the head with one of the sticks by an unknown person. The group then dispersed quickly. They fled the scene in a black pickup. A 41-year-old transient was arrested for assault and battery and held on $2,500 bail after he allegedly threw a piece of watermelon at a City employee in Palisades Park at around 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12, police said. The 40-year-old City worker, who was mowing the grass in the park, asked a group of people to move so he could mow the section they were sitting on, Guido said. Ronald Sexton allegedly stood up and threw the piece of watermelon at the worker. The melon missed the man but hit his lawn mower. The City employee notified police and pointed out Sexton to them. He then gave the clerk a demand note, asking for the money in the register, Guido said. The clerk gave the suspect $200 from the cash register. He then fled the store.
