Portraits

January 13, 2010 -- Don Bachardy, our master portrait maker, will open his exhibition at Craig Krull Gallery. The exhibition will present his artwork from 1959 to 2009, a 50-year restrospective. It must have been hard to choose what to hang on the gallery walls, he is such a prolific artist.

Bachardy has an uncanny talent. His self portraits find the essence of the sitter, and with great dexterity and simple lines he captures the character of his subject -- himself changing over 50 years.

Barriers

The Santa Monica Museum of Art will present the United States premier of "Sabbath 2008,"by Nira Pereg, a video that, according to the museum's description, "documents the closing down of the ultra-orthodox neighborhoods in and around Jerusalem on the eve of the Sabbath. In most cases, public access to these neighborhoods is blocked by means of temporary barriers, which remain closed for 24 hours, thus creating an artificial border between the orthodox areas and the rest of the city.

"Neighborhood residents, with the approval and support of the Jerusalem municipality and the police, put the barriers in place. The city therefore becomes topologically transformed into two cities -- one with and one without cars. Although the value of these somewhat rickety barriers may appear symbolic, their presence is sometimes a source of friction and conflict; they delineate a clear-cut boundary between the sacred and the everyday. Pereg's subject matter is often full of political tension, but in "Sabbath 2008," she has created a film that is objective in offering a documentary view of an important aspect of religious Jewish life."

Plastic

A nostalgic exhibition is coming up at the Cardwell Jimmerson in Culver City titled "The Last Plastic Show," a recreation of the 1972 group exhibition that took place at Cal Arts in 1972 with the same title. Many artists will be represented, among them Peter Alexander, Carol Caroompas, Judy Chicago ,Ron Davis, Fred Eversley, Craig Kaufman, Ed Mosses, Barbara Smith, and many more. Some are gone, and some are still here and working,

The plastic material was and is a lethal material many artists used in the late 1960s and early 1970s; not many deal with it today.
